here is a simple non-destructive mod to relocate the USB slot to the side of the machine:

This is achieved by offsetting the support pillar forward to create a gap just large enough to slide the stock USB extension cable through. Just need a little remodelling of the groove mount which is made of soft rubber.
Works on both left and right side, but be careful to stay clear of the motherboard if used on the left hand side.
