Edit: I read your post more carefully, There shouldn't be any film above the glass. Maybe yours was assembled weird and the screen protector was under the black tape? On mine the black tape is applied directly to the glass. By adding the FEP film you probably increased the distance between the LCD and the part too much causing it to be poorly masked. Try just adding new black tape to seal the lcd glass to the printer.

The upper polarizing layer is a VERY thin flexible glass-like material that is often described as a "film"--without it the LCD shutter cannot function.

The lower polarizer (rearmost in the illustration) orients the light to a particular polarity--in the OFF STATE the liquid crystals pass the polarized light with no change in polarity, thus it is blocked by the upper (foremost) polarizer mounted at 90° relative to the lower film. When each liquid crystal element is energised it twists, twisting the light passing through it and thus allowing it to pass through the top polarizer.
