Model sink?

In the image what causes the model to sink or pull away from the supports? I get this every so often and cannot seem to figure out what would cause it. This seems to also be a cause of failed prints. Any insights would be great.

This is usually related to supports. Either not enough or the contact point isn't big enough. It's suggested to always use large supports too.
